New stories of homeless

In January 2022, an exhibition ‘team’ made of Crisis artists and staff was created by Sally and a Crisis member. Co-production was at the heart of this project, and highlighted the importance of community in ending homelessness for good.

Homelessness isn't just an issue for, nor the responsibility, of the individuals that experience it - it is for us as a society to challenge and change this issue, together. We worked together in Crisis art workshops, creative writing sessions, photography tutorials, and music jams to create the work displayed at the exhibition in Santosa in August and September 2022. Crisis members also independently created work. This was a multi-medium exhibition which included: oil, acrylic, charcoal, pencil, fimo, lino cut, pen, cardboard, photography, and sculpture.

The exhibition was collated under three themes:

  • The hidden and the exposed experience

  • Home vs house

  • Journey to wholeness

Our work was connected by many "Mycelium" strings. This was inspired by our partnership with the Talbot Rice Gallery and the exhibition we saw there by Angelica Mesiti. Mycelium connects the natural world together - "it is fungal roots, and the star actors in the web of communication that knits plant life together over sometimes vast expanses". We want to use this as a metaphor to show how, as a group - our work connects together, but also to develop the point that homelessness is a societal issue and can only be eradicated if we connect, understand each other's stories, and challenge homelessness as a team.

Furthering this idea of "teams", we worked in partnership with other organisations and individuals across Edinburgh to create this exhibition. The Talbot Rice Gallery welcomed us into their space where we were given private tours of exhibitions and a room to create artwork. James Clegg facilitated a curation session for us which has helped us to understand this process and curate our own exhibition. Our photography sessions were held at the Filmhouse and led by Annalisa Colarusso from Edinburgh Napier who worked with us for 8 weeks, enabling us to use equipment from the university. All of our team sessions have been held at The Crannie, a space that has become our second home. Our musical jams have been held at the Crannie as well as the Pianodrome in the old Royal High.
